- Two or three teammates touching the ball simultaneously count as two (or three) hits — except when blocking.
- If two players try to reach the ball but only one touches it, one hit is counted.
- If opponents touch the ball simultaneously above the net ("joust") and the ball remains in play, the team receiving the ball gets another three hits.
- If such a ball goes out, it is the fault of the team on the opposite side.
